OHIM's fee for the application and registration of a Community trade mark is likely to drop to around €1000 by mid-2009, OHIM President Wubbo de Boer has told the Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys' conference in Alicante.

Mr de Boer said that the European Commission had indicated that this was when it expected the new fee formula, agreed at a joint meeting of OHIM's Administrative Board and Budget Committee in Brussels last week, to take effect.

The OHIM President was giving the keynote speech at ITMA's autumn conference. The event, on 25-26 September, also included a presentation by Vincent O’Reilly, Director of OHIM's Department for IP Policy, and a "practitioner's response" on OHIM by Simon Bentley, from Abel & Imray.
